Mandatory Software Update from Cardiac Science

Cardiac Science has issued a mandatory software update for certain automatic external defibrillators (AED) manufactured between August 2003 and August 2009.

You can find out more information on the specifics of the issues the software update corrects here. To initiate the update you your AED go to the Cardiac Science website. You will need to connect the AED to your computer and then the website will prompt you for the serial number of the specific AED that is connected. The website will further prompt you to complete the software upload.

State Statutes and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, 26 States have statutes related to Carbon Monoxide Detectors. Is your state among them? Check the list here. If your state is listed, read on. Even if it’s not listed, read on because Carbon Monoxide (CO) is life threatening.

A recent blog post, Monitor Carbon Monoxide in Your Workplace, explains the dangers so I won’t cover the information again. Please do take the time to read the post though, as it is very informative.

The purpose of my blog today is to talk about the Kidde CO Alarms Conney Safety Products offers.

Kidde Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm

The Kidde Combination Carbon Monoxide & Smoke Alarm provides two important safety devices in a single unit. This alarm includes a voice warning system that announces “Fire, Carbon Monoxide, Low Battery and Smart Hush™ Activation”. The voice alarm eliminates any confusion and clearly warns of a smoke or carbon monoxide danger, or if the battery is in need of replacement. This technically advanced combination alarm is battery operated protecting workers or family even during a power outage when many incidences occur. The unit is an easy to install alarm and has a 7-year life and a 5-year limited warranty.

Kidde Nighthawk Carbon Monoxide Alarm

The Kidde Nighthawk™ Carbon Monoxide Alarm is an AC powered direct plug-in, carbon monoxide alarm that can be installed easily in any standard wall outlet. This carbon monoxide alarm uses advanced technology to monitor for carbon monoxide levels in the workplace or home and features the Nighthawk™ electrochemical sensor, offering accurate carbon monoxide sensing technology. This alarm has a clean, low profile design along with two LED’s; green for normal operation and red for alarm mode. Unit has a 5-year limited warranty.

Cal/OSHA Recalls 3M 8000 Respirators

Recently the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) and Cal/OSHA have become aware that the 3M 8000, a prevalent respirator model in the state and federal supply, has a low success rate in fit-testing. After further investigation, and discussions with the manufacturer and other respirator experts, CDPH has decided to withhold further shipments of this respirator and has asked local health departments to stop providing these respirators to health care facilities.

Fit-testing is a critical component of respirator use, since respirators protect people against inhaling infectious particles by sealing to the face, therefore forcing inhaled air to pass through the respirator filter instead of around the sides of the respirator. While Cal/OSHA is not prohibiting use of the 3M 8000 per se, it strongly recommends against using this model for prevention of aerosol transmitted disease and urges employers, if they decide to issue a respirator of this model to any employee, to assure a successful fit test with that employee.

It’s important to note that this is a Cal/OSHA recall only, not a 3M recall.
