I read about an interesting study that was designed to study human factors in hearing protection – worker attitudes, risk perception and behavior. I think you will find this data most interesting. A few curious observations:
- When hearing conservation training was provided at new-hire induction, only 27% of workers recognized they had been trained.
- The workers who had a high knowledge with regard to noise levels and hearing conservation also demonstrated high-risk perception (awareness that hazardous workplace noise damages hearing permanently).
This article discusses that personal attitudes towards hearing protection and workplace behavior can be changed by knowledge and training. The observed use of hearing protection measurably increased after effective training interventions (especially after using creative and engaging training techniques). Take a few minutes to read this article to see how you can put a boost in your hearing conservation program.
