This article is a great review about considerations when selecting eyewear for your employees. Studies estimate that 90% of eye injuries in the workplace are preventable, so it is quite obvious what is happening when an injury occurs….the employee isn’t wearing any eye protection!
While picking out safety glasses isn’t rocket science, you really have to consider factors other than just what is stylish to the workers. When I talk to customers, 9 out of 10 times it seems they only care to select cool designs because “that will encourage the employee to wear their safety glasses.”
Beyond the simple style of the glasses, there are a few other factors to consider that the article discusses — weight, head/face/nose comfort, and design to get maximum field of vision. One additional issue that I commonly see when conducting a plant audit or walk-through is employees using the wrong eyewear when a chemical splash is possible. Safety glasses are never allowed for any chemical splash protection without the addition of a face shield, yet many facilities do not enforce this issue. The other alternative would be an indirect vent chemical splash goggle.
