OSHA revealed their top 10 safety violations for fiscal 2009 at the National Safety Council Congress and Expo down in Orlando last week. No big surprises, other than the fact that these top violations are up almost 30% over last year. As a safety professional, I really like seeing these “Top 10” lists, as it can give safety managers a little perspective of common violations and remind them to look at their own facility regarding their individual safety programs.
I feel that part of the reason “Scaffolding” and “Fall Protection” have dominated the top 10 list in recent years is simply related to both the high visibility of the work activity and the increase in inspections at construction sites. Fall related injuries have remained high. The construction boom earlier this decade has obviously contributed to all of these factors.
Take a moment to look at the list and see if your facility is in proper compliance related to this list. While this review does not grant you a clean bill of health for your safety program, it is a gentle reminder to review current safety policies and procedures. The goal is to first eliminate the more serious and obvious hazards that contribute to the injury/accident rate at a company. We need to remember that many of these OSHA violations on this list could have resulted AFTER a serious injury or death had occurred.
